Afternoon, Hart Beat! How’s your day going so far? I have a post for you but before it goes up I thought I’d give you a mini update on where I am and what I’m doing right now. It doesn’t seem right to just jump into things without giving some kind of news in my life.

So Hannah, what are you up to right now? I imagine you asking. Literally, right now I am sitting in a coffee shop in Portland, Maine having the first decent cup of coffee since coming back from Spain. Four for you Portland you go Portland (if you don’t get this then watch Mean Girls immediately). It’s cloudy outside and I’m hoping that the clouds pass so I can walk around the old port this afternoon.

More generally right now the big news for me is I’ve left New York for the foreseeable future. It makes me sad that I won’t be going back there for a long time but, I’m also excited about this new change. Lots of you have been pinging me on Instagram asking a, where am I and b, where will I be going in the fall. To be completely honest right now Hart Beat, I can answer a but b is completely up in the air.

Squirrel Island, ME

For the summer, I’m staying with my Grandmother on an island off the coast of Maine. Squirrel Island is a summer community that I used to come every summer of my childhood. My mom did the same growing up and so, it’s a very familiar and comforting place. The island is small, only about three miles around, and it’s just a summer community. This means that the harbor turns the water off after Labor Day and doesn’t turn it on until Memorial Day. There are about one hundred “cottages” aka houses if you aren’t from the Hamptons and they’re all different sizes and various degrees from camping. I like to think of my Grandmothers house like a tree house; part camping part cottage. The other amazing part? There are no stores, cars, or bikes. You have to walk around and if you can’t occupy yourself with books, walking, and sitting staring at the ocean then you probably won’t like it. Lucky me I love all three of those things.

I was out running the other day on the island and it occurred to me that this is the first time in my life that I have no idea what I’m doing next. In March not only did I leave New York but, I left Pedro and I left my job at Food52. I am literally a free agent right now. It’s terrifying. But secretly, it’s also exciting, Hart Beat. I don’t know where I’m going in the fall but, I am taking sales pitches. Samantha gave me a pretty good spiel about D.C. Last night. I also got a good pitch on Toronto this morning on the ferry.

Until I decide where I’m going next I’m going to keep writing to you here, Hart Beat. And I have one favor from you in return. Since I’m not going back to Brooklyn this here blog needs a new tag line. As much as it pains me, this is no longer “Your Brooklyn Lifestyle Blog.” RIP SEO. I need other ideas! Please comment here if you have any… my mind keeps coming up blank for now.

Always, Hannah

Blogging vacation in Maine

Hi Hart Beat. I am so, so excited to be writing to you tonight. Why do you ask? Well, the answer is short (one word actually): VACATION. That’s right. Starting today I’m on a week and a half vacation from my job and my apartment in Brooklyn. Today my mom and I drove up to the island in Maine that I’ve been coming to since a child and I’ll be spending the rest of the week and all of next hanging out up here with my family. I’m sad to leave Brooklyn and my job but I am SO HAPPY because for the next week and a half I’ll be able to blog like I’ve always wanted. I’ve missed you Hart Beat!

I’m so happy these next ten days to read, write and relax. This Ernest Hemingway quote keeps repeating in my head. I’ll have to take it out of the library tomorrow.
For more photos follow my instagram this week. I’ll be posting up a storm.

My Weekend on a Maine Island

Hey Hart Beat. I hope your Wednesday is going well. I’m on my lunch break and though I’d share some photos with you from this past Memorial Day Weekend. As I mentioned last week, my college roommate and I joined my family on an island in Maine where my Grandmother has a summer house. It was such a beautiful weekend, Hart Beat. The island was just opening for the summer (they turn the water off in the winter) and a bunch of families made the trek north to enjoy the sunny weather.
The entire weekend we spent wandering around the small island, visiting friends, looking out at the water and hanging out with my mom’s new puppy. She had been looking at australian labradoodle puppies for a while and she finally decided to get one. He’s in a bunch of the photos below, I can’t get enough. I hope you like the pictures and that they give you a little boost this cold and dreary Wednesday.

This was my jam when I was growing up.
My mom brought her new Labradoodle puppy up to the island. James is about 8 months old so he’s still getting used to being off leash and playing with other dogs. He had the best time! There were so many other family dogs running around that he got to make so many friends. Getting a puppy was a great idea for mom. She spent ages learning about them on websites like zooawesome.com and the puppy adores her too! It’s so cute! Buying a puppy can be expensive but I think they’re worth every penny. You’ll have to pay for vet bills, hair cuts and pet food so the costs can quickly add up. That said, my friend uses pet food coupons which makes looking after her many pets a bit cheaper!! Below are some of the best puppy play dates.

Memorial Day Weekend in Maine

Bonjour Hart Beat!! Happy long weekend! This weekend my best friend from college (remember C?) and I are driving up to Maine to spend the holiday weekend at my Grandmother’s summer house. We’ll be on an island off Boothbay Harbor for the entire weekend! I grew up going to the island but C has never been and I can’t wait to show her around! I won’t be blogging since the island has no internet (or cars, or restaurants, or grocery stores, or phones) but that’s another story for another day. Have a relaxing Memorial Day Weekend and I’ll talk to you next week!
