All that glitters is demin

Hannah Hart Beat

Hey Hart Beat. September is hereeee!! As as much as I want to deny it it means that fall is upon us and we can no long er use the oppressive heat for not dressing up to New York City level. I mean I’ve been getting emails about capital F Fall Fashion for a few months now but it’s only just occurring to me to start looking at what the cool kids are actually wearing. My first report: denim. is. everywhere.

Between creeping/not creeping (depending on your definition) on other women on the subway train, scrolling through Instagram or pinning to my hearts content on Pinterest all I see is a sea (ha) of denim. Even Madewell did 24 days of denim this August to prepare us all for the fall weather. These are the things I’m seeing around and where you can find them too,

  • Embroidery. I don’t know where this started but I like it. Words, flowers, and designs are everywhere on denim pants and jackets right now. Our DIY friends at a pair and a spade show you how to do it here and if you’re interested in buying Asos has some cool things.
  • Cropped and frayed hems. Denim pants are now being cut all kinds of ways to show the frayed hems of the pant. The one detail I’m loving is people are cutting the front part of the hem shorter than the end so that it kind of reveals a box look. It’s kind of sexy, Hart Beat. I did it to one of my older pair of pants and I have to say it’s pretty flattering. If you don’t want to wreck any of your favorite jeans Need Supply Co. is selling jeans with the pre cut look.
  • Denim tops (paired with jeans). Ahh, the old Texas tuxedo has made it’s way to New York and people are liking it. My southern friends should be proud. The tops I’m liking come from Madewell and Asos.

Morning Hart Beat! As many of you know, living in the city is rough on your body. Between the blisters from walking three miles a day, the overwhelming garbage smell in the summer that never leaves your hair, the exhaust that pumps into your lungs 24/7, and so much more, it’s really a surprise that anyone here is in the slightest bit healthy.

All of this body slamming that goes on isn’t the worst part of living in the city (at least for me), what really gets me from this tough living is what the city does to my clothes and shoes.

Bike Style by Eleanor’s

It’s an exciting day today my dear Hart Beat. Why is that you ask? I am proud to announce that today Hannah Hart Beat was featured by the brilliant Eleanor’s Stylish Bicycle Accessories website and blog. I was approached by the site a couple weeks ago asking if they could interview me about bike style for their blog. Of course I said yes, blog city baby.

Eleanor’s Stylish Bicycle Accessories is a Brooklyn based store and website dedicated to the stylish biker in all of us. The web store carries great helmets (if I didn’t lose mine all the time I would invest), bike boxes, and all kind of other accessories. Eleanor’s also features a wonderful blog about chic cycling gear and style. Some of my favorite posts have been 5 Bike Helmet Friendly Short Hair Styles, and this rose garland bike for Valentine’s Day.

I am so honored to be included in such an amazing site dedicated to biking and style (two of my favorite things) and I hope you all enjoy reading the article!

1. What is Hannah Hart Beat blog about?
Hannah Hart Beat is a lifestyle blog that highlights photographs, music, poems, and fashion brands all with a romantic twist. I started the blog while I was in college writing my undergraduate thesis. After writing about Spanish literature all day every day, every day, I desperately needed a break and a distraction. Hart Beat was the perfect creative outlet. Now Hart Beat centers around my life in Brooklyn, more specifically, my life in Greenpoint.
2. Where is your favorite destination for a bicycle ride?
I’m lucky that one of my all time favorite rides starts right outside my apartment in Greenpoint. There is a great bike path that runs down along the East River and makes it all the way south to the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s such a peaceful stretch within the city and I love looking out at the beautiful Manhattan skyline.
3. Does your bike have a story?
Oh yes. The neon color rock hopper was originally my dad’s bike in the 80′s. He called it Rocky Balboa and gave it to me when I moved to Brooklyn two years ago. Rocky’s not the most beautiful bike but since I ride everyday I never have to worry about it breaking down or being taken when it is parked outside in my neighborhood. The mahogany wooden box on the back was made for me by a carpenter friend who lives in my neighborhood and I use it to carry just about everything.
4. What is your favorite restaurant?
Le Gamin in Greenpoint. They have an unlimited muscles, french fries and wine night once a week. Who wouldn’t love that?
5. Early bird or night owl?
A. Early bird, for sure. With a midday nap thrown in there.
6. Who is someone you admire?
Anyone who is brave to bike New York City in the winter.
Photo credit for all the pictures goes out to Samantha Plakun.

VOZ Spring and Summer Collection

Hey Hart Beat. I know that it’s freezing out this week (holla at ya winter) but I still think we should dream about summer days and warm weather together. If only for kicks. Anyway, recently I had the pleasure of meeting the women behind the amazing fashion start-up VOZ.

VOZ celebrates cultural tradition through design innovation. Through collaborative workshops, we provide training in design innovation to skilled rural weavers, beginning with Mapuche communities in Southern Chile. VOZ international designers work intimately with artisans to envision, prototype and finalize our fair trade fashion collections. VOZ’ hand-made garments give a new voice to artisans by bridging centuries of their exquisite craft traditions to modern fashion platforms.

Beautiful, right? It’s everything I’ve always imagined in a fashion company. VOZ has an immaculate Fall/Winter 2013 line on their website but bellow are a few of my favorite pieces for Spring/Summer 2014. What’s even better than all this? VOZ sells online here and this weekend they’re having a trunk show in the city. See you there, Hart Beat!

All the beautiful original pieces can be found on the VOZ website.

Style Icon: Jane Birkin

Happy Thursday, Hart Beat! I’m so happy to be relaxing in my favorite neighborhood today on my day off. Brooklyn, you are always pulling at my heartstrings. Anyway, as many of you have probably noticed, I’ve been pretty fashion obsessed lately. Today I wanted to share some pictures of my fashion icon of late, Jane Birkin.

P.S. Yes, while writing this post I did think about Birkin bags obsessively. And yes, that means that “A Birkin bag! A Birkin bag for Rorey!” played in my head over and over again. You’re welcome.

What I (wish I) wore

Oh hey there Hart Beat. What are you doing this lovely Tuesday night? I’m catching up on some things in my apartment and thought I would share some outfit dreams I’ve been having lately. This is bad news bears, Hart Beat. I really shouldn’t want or need any more clothes… Alternatively, I think I need to start dreaming in more color and less in neutral tones.

Emerson Fry does it again

Hey Hart Beat. As many of you loyal readers know, I have a healthy(?) obsession with Emerson Fry the New York City based clothing line. Everyone of her pieces is so simple and beautiful. I wish I could wear her clothes exclusively all the time. The Fall/Winter 2013 collection was released earlier this month and I can’t stop drooling over the pant/coat/show combinations that this talented woman puts together. What do you think, Hart Beat? You an Emerson fan too?
This shirt. These pants. Oof.
What I wish I could look like every time I leave my apartment.
Hello darling.
This metallic skirt. I want it.
