What Happened, Miss Simone?

24WHATHAPPEN-master675

Hi Hart Beat. Have you heard the news? Last week, on Friday to be exact, Netflix released a new documentary all about one of my favorite singers, Nina Simone. The movie was released in New York on Wednesday at the IFC in the Village and since it isn’t going to be released in theaters anywhere else the doc was then released Friday on Netflix. Lucky us!

Pedro and I watched “What Happened, Miss Simone?” this Saturday and although it’s a little long, it is most definitely worth watching. The film uses amazing real video of Nina Simone on stage singing and playing piano as well as interviews with the artist about her life and relationships. These clips are interspersed with interviews with her daughter, her husband and other people who knew Miss. Simone.

Not only was it amazing seeing her sing so many of my favorite songs, but I learned so much about the singer that I didn’t know before the documentary. I had no idea that Simone was trained as a classical pianist, or her about struggle with bipolar disorder. If you’re a documentary junkie like Pedro or if you love music and stories about people then this is a must watch.

Her soundtrack

Oh Hart Beat, have you seen the movie her this month? If you haven’t I seriously cannot recommend it more. Seriously, if you haven’t seen it go out this weekend and make it a priority. The entire movie is beautiful, from the colors, to the costumes, to the story, I was in a state of breathlessness the entire time. One of my favorite parts of the movie was the music soundtrack. Most of the songs used are originals to the movie and they all fit so seamlessly into the heartbreakingly romantic movie.

Unfortunately for both me and you, the soundtrack is not available for download or purchase. Even more strange, it is apparently MIA even though it has been nominated for an oscar. The only song released is the Karen O song featured in the trailer. I’ve posted it here for you and you can also download it for free by following this link here. Also, this.

Favorite foreign film: El Secreto de sus Ojos

Hi. Have you heard of the movie El Secret de sus Ojos (The Secret In Their Eyes en inglés)? It’s a beautifully romantic, suspenseful Argentinian movie that was released back in 2009. I originally saw it a couple of years ago but watched it again the other day. I thought you all dear readers of Hart Beat would enjoy it.

The movie follows a couple of detectives in Buenos Aires as they attempt to solve a brutal killing. What the movie is really about at it’s core, as most good movies are, is an unrequited love story between the two leads. This veiled love story paralleled with a suspenseful court case makes for one of the most beautiful and awe inspiring movies I’ve ever seen. It’s really hard to describe it Hart Beat, I just really think you should watch it if you get the chance. Bonus part, you get to practice you’re Spanish while watching. Win-win right there, right?
This scene breaks my heart every time.

Girl from the north country

Last night my amazing friend M. and I saw the movie “Silver Linings Playlist” at the Angelika. I had wanted to see the movie since it came out and I absolutely loved it. One of my favorite parts was a scene in which Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence were sitting listening to this song here. The original Bob Dylan version of this song is one of my favorites of all time but I had never heard the version of Bob and Johnny Cash singing together. This duet is making my day, Hart Beat.

If you’re traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was the true love of mine

Black

So today was a pretty lazy day at the astral. B. is in town visiting G. so we all had a nice lunch at a diner in my neighborhood. Coffee friends indeed. I also spent this evening watching a movie I had wanted to watch for a while. “Like Crazy” was just like “Blue Valentine” in that I had been putting it off for a long time. It just came on Netflix instant recently so I kind of had to watch it. The movie was good sad and it seemed really true to me. I liked the ending, even though theres so much ambiguity in the whole thing. I liked it anyway.

A little movie review and song tonight for all you lovely readers. Feliz 2013!
