Hi Hart Beat! Off the heels of International Women’s Day I want to share with you one of my favorite women in the media world, Ann Friedman. I don’t remember how Ann came into my life but if she’s not in yours then you need to GET WITH ME (well her really). It’s hard to write about Ann Friedman, primarily because she is one of the best journalists/commentators/writers out there, and because you probably have (with or without knowing) read her work all over the internet. While trying to write a bio for her I just kept getting sucked into her website and that lead me down a rabbit hole of distraction.
As a quick overview, Ann Freidman is a Los Angeles based journalist who writes for many national publications like NYmag.com, The Guardian, Elle Magazine, and The New York Times Book Review. Ann writes about all kinds of things but mostly concentrates in gender, politics, culture and media. There are so many other things that I love about Ann that I think it would be easiest to list them.
1. Ann is one of the hosts of the podcast Call Your Girlfriend! Tbh I hadn’t actually listened to Call Your Girlfriend until very recently. I don’t know why (so don’t ask me) but I can now attest that it’s amazing. The most recent episode (apparently) was very classic so I guess listen to that one first? P.S. Aminatou Sow is the other host to CYG and she is equally awesome. Check her out.
2. She also (like all that isn’t enough) sends out the most amazing weekly newsletter which will knock your socks off. It’s send every Friday and is an amazing compilation of interesting articles Ann recommends (hello Friday subway readings), articles that she’s written in the past week (hereare a few recentexamples), and a GIF of the week. There are other things really but you should just subscribe and see for yourself this Friday.
3. PIE CHARTS. These are pretty self explanatory. Ann hand draws amazing pie charts on things like “What have we made our peace with?” and “Why didn’t we exercise this week?” They’re hilarious and I love her.
And those are the three reasons I’m loving Ann Friedman right now. Are there any girl crushes you’re nursing right now, Hart Beat?
Hi Hart Beat! Sorry for the radio silence this week. Pedro and I came down with a horrible cold over the weekend at my parents so I’ve been lying low. Today I wanted to talk a little bit about a lifestyle craze that I’ve been seeing all over the place.
Have you noticed how big florists have become. They’re everywhere! And it’s not just for weddings anymore, lifestyle flower arraigners are gaining hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers, they’re collaborating with big brands and blogs like Madewell and Garance Doré, using services like upleap.com, and they’re quickly becoming the new fashion blogger or baker of the moment.
It’s all for very good reason though. Flower arranging in a beautiful way is a skill, it’s not something that just anyone can do successful (ahem yours truly cannot successfully make anything beautiful out of green things). So, in the spirit of this new craze, here are a few florists that I’ve been following lately.
Hey Hart Beat. If you are a fan of this blog then you how I feel about Madewell. The brand has been around for a while and it’s one that I’ve worn pretty consistently since moving to New York. This fall the brand released not only their new fall lookbook (shot in Rome) but also a series of videos that they created with three creative women.
The three women, writer Christina Pérez, florist Lisa Przystup, and musician Adeline Michèle, all put together different outfits that Madewell has up on their site. The brand also put together three short videos that you can watch on their youtube channel. The compilation one is here (you might even recognize the song) and I thought you might like to see. It does, unfortunately have the ability to make you start to go “oh man why isn’t my life as perfect as these girls and how come I don’t look that casually beautiful all the time??”
I’ll forgive Madewell though since sometimes you need a little bit to dream about. Also, shout out to Lisa Przystup aka @brass_tacks who lives in Greenpoint!
As if I wasn’t enough of a fan, our girl Emma Stone is interviewed in an article to be published in print today with enough personality and beauty to make me crush even harder than before. The interview is between Emma and Eddie Redmayne, the actor who starred in “The Theory of Everything.” In it the two young stars discuss how they both told their parents they wanted to be actors, what it’s like having the paparazzi outside your house everyday and what being in a relationship in hollywood means.
I loved hearing what Emma thinks about the fame that she’s garnered over the years. It was also amazing to hear her talk about “Birdman,” for which she’s nominated for best supporting actress. You can read the entire article online here and look for it in print on Sunday!
Oh hello there Hart Beat. As I’m sure many of you dear readers are aware, our girl Joanna posted a great new series on her blog the other day entitled “My beauty uniform.” In her first post of the series Jo (come on girl, we’re friends now) wrote about her friend and “one of the sweetest and most effortlessly beautiful people I’ve ever met,” Courtney Adamo.
Oh Miss Courtney, can I have your life? Can I have it?
I’m sure that Courtney, the founder and co-owner of a baby boutique online aggregator site called Babyccino, is another European form of Joanna Goddard but at this point I don’t care. I am fascinated by her life in London, her four beautiful children, her effortless style, and the work life that she has created for herself.
Oh Courtney, tell me your secrets (and not just about the two hundred dollar face cream you use, I’m on an entry level budget here). Apparently Courtney met her husband while living in San Francisco and then the two of them moved to London for her husbands job. While living in England Mrs. Adamo began a blog with her other mommy friends living around Europe and now that has turned into Babccino.
It’s fine, Hart Beat. We all can’t have our lives together like this. It is fun though to read articles about her life and marvel at her ridiculously clean house (YOU HAVE FOUR CHILDREN). So, on this drab Monday, let’s live vicariously through my newest girl crush.
Oh hey there, Hart Beat. Seeing as there are roughly a million Pinterest boards and Buzzfeed articles dedicated to our favorite celebrity Jennifer Lawrence, I thought it was time to dedicate a little Hart Beat space to the beautiful woman. Who doesn’t want to be this girl?
