Superstore

Let’s face it, Hart Beat. There’s a lot out there in the TV universe right now. Too much, honestly if you want my opinion. Every channel has something to offer and now that Hulu and Netflix are making original content, there is even more. So, the question begs itself, what’s my favorite new show on the air right now.

Yes, I’ve seen This is Us, and that’s not it. Yes, I’ve watched The Path, The Mindy Project, and Rick and Morty. All are great TV and I enjoy them all but, my favorite show right now is one that isn’t garnering as much press and so I thought I’d tell you about it. Have you seen Superstore yet, Hart Beat?

The show, starring America Ferrera, is a network show airing on NBC. It’s a half-hour sitcom with a motley cast of characters. The show isn’t big (like The Crown), it’s not slapstick funny (like Silicon Valley), and it’s not star-studded (like Big Little Lies) but, it has so much heart. And that’s why I love it.

Superstore has a similar story line as other office comedies. It’s similar to The Office and Parks and Recs in that way. The show takes place in big, box store and follows the people who work there. There is a store manager and an assistant manager that have a troubling relationship. There are lovable side stories with the supporting cast. And, most importantly, there is a budding romance at the center of the show. America Ferrera plays the lead and has an ongoing flirtation with her co-worker Jonah played by Ben Feldman.

In the show, not crazily dissimilar to The Office, America Ferrera’s character is in a relationship (this time married with a teenage daughter) and Jonah is a single, fun loving guy who is unknowingly in love with Ferrera’s character. I love the relationship between Amy and Jonah. It’s so sweet and innocent that I could watch them talk forever and ever. The show is 100% comfort food and I love it.

Not to gush (okay we’re passed that point) but, the other reason I love the show is that it has reintroduced me to America Ferrera. It’s been years since she was really on my celebrity radar but now she’s all over it. Her Instagram is now my favorite and, I felt like a proud little sister when she announced last night’s episode of Superstore was her directorial debut. This woman is amazing and I love her.

Have you heard of or seen Superstore, Hart Beat? If you haven’t don’t waste any time! It’s on Hulu and boom, your night’s plans have been made.

Photos one and two are of the show and the last (glamour) shot of Ferrera is via her Instagram.

LA LA LAND

L.A. L.A.

La La Land

Oh, Hart Beat. It’s cold here. It’s so cold here. It’s so so so cold and miserable here in New York that even The New York Times is writing about how today was one of the worst Monday’s. But, instead of complaining about how frozen my toes are and how slow the subway was this morning, let’s dream about L.A. instead, okay?

Because, have you seen La La Land!?! If there ever was a movie made for Hart Beat this would be it. The entire time I was watching it I felt like every scene was specially made for me. The music, the costumes, the light, the people… I can’t even. It was magical. Just watch this clip from the movie here. Ryan Gossling and Emma Stone sing the main theme from the movie.

Through the whole movie, I kept forgetting where I was and what time period the movie was supposed to be in. They would walk down the street and then Emma Stone would get in a Prius and I’d be all Ohhhhhh, right right right. This is happening now, not in the 1920’s. And the music! Lucky for you and me both the soundtrack version and the official movie score are both on Spotify so we can all pretend we live in the magical world of La La Land.

Have you seen the movie? If you haven’t run/walk/dance/tap dance there asap.

P.S. I forgive the Times because they published an article about all the classic dance moves that La La Land has in it. Definitely worth a read!

Morning Hart Beat. This weekend was about a million years long thanks to running this bad boy and I can’t believe that it’s now Monday morning. Whomp. Anyway, over the weekend I was catching up on one of my favorite instagram accounts @Noorfilm (aka the makers behind N Ø R R – Filmmaking and some great projects). A few weeks ago they posted this great photo of Sofia Coppola with a quote about her vision behind filmmaking.

I’ve written about Sofia earlier here on the blog (please excuse the blurry photos they did not transition well to the new blog) but I really love the one that Nøor posted too.

The Singles: a celebrity, a rock star and a girl manifesto

Hey Hart Beat! Surprise from paradise! My mom and I last Wednesday luckily took our annual winter peace out to the sunny island of Antigua for some well needed rest and relaxation. Thelma and Louis at it again, as my dad would say.

Anyway, while here I heard both surprising and happy news that one of my favorite celebrities Scarlett Johansson has teamed up with three other female artists (including Este Haim, the oldest of the Haim sisters, on drums) in a new all-girl pop-rock group called The Singles. They’ve released their first single which apparently has been likined to many other singers including Debbie Harry, Grimes and Robyn. I’m not so convinced about all those comparisons and to be honest I’m not super crazy about the song (“Candy to my heart” doesn’t really do it for me” and honestly, neither does her Marilyn impression on the cover on the song) but I thought it was fun news to share with those of you struggling to keep your lips from freezing. I mean, if I had the super power like Scarlett I know I would start an all girl band too. Let’s be real, Hart Beat (trademarking The Heartbreakers here and now!)

Girl Crush: Emma Stone in the New York Times

As if I wasn’t enough of a fan, our girl Emma Stone is interviewed in an article to be published in print today with enough personality and beauty to make me crush even harder than before. The interview is between Emma and Eddie Redmayne, the actor who starred in “The Theory of Everything.” In it the two young stars discuss how they both told their parents they wanted to be actors, what it’s like having the paparazzi outside your house everyday and what being in a relationship in hollywood means.

I loved hearing what Emma thinks about the fame that she’s garnered over the years. It was also amazing to hear her talk about “Birdman,” for which she’s nominated for best supporting actress.
You can read the entire article online here and look for it in print on Sunday!

THAT POISE. And rings. They remind me of my favorites

9 Kisses: In which Julianne Moore and John Lithgow dance

Hi Hart Beat! I just found the most amazing video of the year, nay, the century! This Academy Awards season The New York Times has put together a series of short videos called “9 Kisses” that pairs up this years hottest actors in a series of “intimate encounters” aka parody scenes that couldn’t be more perfect. My FAVORITE by far is the video of Julianne Moore and John Lithgow dancing. Yes, my friends, these two dance and I have to say that Julianne looks so beautiful and kills it on the dance floor. I think she may be my spirit animal now. To watch them all visit the New York Times official site.

P.S. Shout-out to Benedict Cumberbatch and Reese Witherspoon. Those outfits should go on the years best dressed lists.

Hola, June!!

Oh hello there, Hart Beat. Happy JUNE! I can’t believe that it’s June already!! May flew by and now here we are at the beginning of another summer. I am so happy this month to be able to relax in Brooklyn and get some things done before the craziness of July hits us. What about you? What are your plans for June, Hart Beat? You traveling anywhere? If you’re not reading this from New York then come to Brooklyn this month! June is the best time to be in the area and there are so many great concerts, parties and openings happening now. See you soon, Hart Beat!

New Coppola movie, Palo Alto

Hey Hart Beat. I hope you had a nice Sunday! I am exahusted from biking and sitting in the sun today but I want to share a trailer with you. I saw the poster for Palo Alto this weekend and immediately came home to watch the trailer because, guess what, it’s written and directed by Sofia Coppola’s sister!

Apparently Gia Coppola is the sixth family member to enter into the film world and Hart Beat, I am so glad. The story is based on the short story book by James Franco… I can’t figure out how I feel about him but I really want to see this movie. Teenage angst? Indie Music? Emma Roberts? A Coppola style film? I love all those things! Want to see it with me at BAM soon, Hart Beat?

On Vacation, Like Gwyneth

Oh Hart Beat, it’s raining in Brooklyn. Horrible, cold rain. My bike hates it. In lieu of shivering from my ride tonight, I thought I would do some planning for my mom and my trip coming up this February. Have you seen the movie “The Talented Mr. Ripley“? I hadn’t seen it until recently and if you’re looking for a creepy, but intriguing movie that takes place in the most beautiful parts of Italy and has a cast that ranges from Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Jude Law to Philip Seymour Hoffman, and, of course, Gwyneth Paltrow then look no farther. I love her style in this movie. It’s the 90’s take on the 50’s wealthy american living in southern Italy in the best way possible.

And as an end note, this great behind the scenes photo from the movie…

Girl crush: Jennifer Lawrence

Oh hey there, Hart Beat. Seeing as there are roughly a million Pinterest boards and Buzzfeed articles dedicated to our favorite celebrity Jennifer Lawrence, I thought it was time to dedicate a little Hart Beat space to the beautiful woman. Who doesn’t want to be this girl?

And Jennifer’s new hair cut? I love it.
