Falling for summer

Hi Hart Beat. I’m so happy right now. It’s finally raining in Brooklyn and I just had the nicest dinner with my oldest friend. Just falling in love with summer again over here in Brooklyn. I guess it happens to the best of us. So, in honor of this lovely summer night, I give to you…. outfit inspirations. Of course, what else would you expect to see here on Hart Beat on a Monday night?

Photographs by Martha Holmes

1948
Another photographer for you! And another woman! I don’t know how I stumbled across Martha Holmes, but I’m captivated now. From my basic research on le internet Holmes photographed mostly in the 1940’s for Life Magazine (including a shoot of Salvador Dalí, who, for personal reasons, I won’t include here.) Do you like these photographs as much as I do, Hart Beat? The last one is my personal favorite.
“Tunnel of Love,” 1949
“Mirror Glasses,” 1948
All photos here taken by the amazingly talented Martha Holmes.

A love letter from Sarah Kay

Hi there Hart Beat. One of the best parts of relaxing at home is I get to read and listen to whatever I want all day long. Today I went on a little spoken word poetry binge and wanted to share on of my favorite (short) pieces here. Soon I want to do a whole post for you on this spoken word poet, Sarah Kay, and some of my others that I don’t want to bother you with here. I would love to here her live in the city sometime.

Escaping the heat

Hola Hart Beat. I don’t know about where you’re reading this from but it is H.O.T in New York City this week. The temperatures have been in the 90’s feeling really like 100+ which is REALLY HOT. (Especially for me, the north country girl that I am.) So, in order to get some relief from the unbearable oppression that is the Manhattan asphalt with hot humid air whirling about, I’m making a trip up to the Berkshires for the next couple days while I have a few days off.

I need the mountain breeze, plus some mom time. How about you Hart Beat? How you holding up in this summer time heat wave?
