Miami horror

Hola! Happy wednesday. Here is a great band recommendation for you. I am really surprised that Miami Horror hasn’t gone viral at Bates and I’m hoping that this post will help it along.

I discovered this band about a year ago and have been obsessed with their amazing dancing tunes ever since. They kind of remind me of a more danceable Miike Snow… Here are two of my favorite songs by the band. The videos for these songs are amazing too.

“Sometimes” by Miami Horror
The ending got you didn’t it? I was very surprised, didn’t know it was going there…
“Holidays” by Miami Horror
Yea… I know the video is weird, I don’t really know what they were going for there.
“And it all comes back to you” is a nice idea though, I can never get that line out of my head after I’ve listened to this song.

Funny people

A very good friend of mine sent me the movie “Baby Mama” today. That and this image have had me santa-laughing all afternoon…
Will Arnett and Amy Poehler
How are they so awkwardly funny? And where did they get all those gloves?

Mumford & Sons live recording

I am sure that most of you reading this blog have already listened to the Mumford & Sons album “Sigh No More” but, I still wanted to share this great live recording of them singing their song “Little Lion Man.” I also really like the image of Marylin Monroe for some reason. She looks so glamourous even when she’s sad…

New books

Read any good books lately? I have been engrossed in The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It is one of those books that you cannot put down once you start it. Unfortunately, my reading pace has been a little slow of late as second semester thesis is kicking into high gear.

On my list of books to read next (after Thesis of course) are Jonathan Frazen’s Freedom and Little Bee by Chris Cleave. Both of these have gotten great reviews.

Paris and free people

Have you heard of the clothing line Free People? I really like their clothes and get pretty excited when I find them on sale somewhere. About a year ago they posted this video from the January photo shoot in Paris. I love the models hair and clothes but lets be honest, what you and I really love is Paris.

The song in this video is also really great. It’s called “At My Heels” and is sung by Twin Shadow. You can listen to the song here.

Next year is the big bad future isn’t it? Where do you want to live? More importantly, what kind of place do you want to live in? I hope my house has four walls and a roof. On a more upbeat note, here are some of the more romantic ideas I have…

Good morning

As I am on a temporary hiatus from Facebook I want to give a big old shout out to Carolyn for posting yesterdays installment on Facebook. And welcome new Hart Beat readers! Tell your friends! Keep reading! Posts are coming at you everyday….

Speaking of today, good morning Bates College and Hart Beat readers! How was your night? Hopefully it was a good one. This lovely morning here are some nice pictures to look at and a really great rendition of “Sentimental Heart” by She & Him. Earlier in the blog universe of Hart Beat a song of Zooey Deschanel’s was posted in case you want more…

HART BEAT!! CAN YOU HEAR ME!? Tonight is a very special night on the Bates College campus. Some may say that this is the best night all year (I can hear you out there 101 girls…) Although last nights Time Travelers concert did set a high bar for entertainment value and head-banging fun, tonight, on the twenty-first of this cold january night, 90’s Dance is coming to town.
“What is this, how do you say, 90’s Dance?” may be a question on many of your minds. Well, for those of you who do not attend the camp-mania that is Bates College in Lewiston Maine, 90’s Dance is always held as the capstone event of our Winter Carnival Weekend. Tonight the college will hold a live band outside in the library arcade singing the 1990’s hits that everyone loves and remembers.
In honor of this wondrous night, I wanted to share some of my favorite 90’s dance tunes. See you in the front row Hart Beat…

All Around the World (la la la la la) by ATC
What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes
Ummm…. this video. Too much. Too much grunge. Too good.
And of course, a little Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bianca Stratford love circa 1999:
*I understand that this song was produced in 2007 but, as it has special meaning and an amazing video, it needed to be here. I hope you like it.

An explanation

Rilo Kiley

Yesterday I posted some lyrics from a great song by a band named Rilo Kiley. This band holds a very special place in my heart and I thought I should explain a little more about them and recommend some other good music. The soul of the band comes from the lead singer Jenny Lewis, who is now going at it as a solo star. Jenny has an amazing voice and I will follow her in whatever she does.

Jenny Lewis

I know that both Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis, as an individual singer, are not new news. But, I did want to explain who and what yesterdays post was. Plus, now anyone who has not discovered their brilliance can enjoy a whole new music awakening.

A Rilo Kiley song called “Portions for Foxes”
A song sung by Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins called “Melt Your Heart”

Sing it, rilo

“Get a real job, keep the wind at your back
and the sun on your face.
All the immediate unknowns are better than
knowing this tired and lonely fate.”

“And I think he loves me.
And when he leaves her,
he’s coming out to California.”

“Let’s not forget ourselves good friend
I am flawed if I’m not free.”

Lyrics from Rilo Kiley, Does He Love You?
